Unit Code: URP884

Unit Name: Urban Design

Description: The purpose of this course is to explain the correlation between sustainable development and land use planning, the background and day to day activities, opportunities and constraints faced during the process of making a land-use plan. Specific methods in sustainable development and land use planning used to implement community plans will be presented and discussed. This course requires addressing a variety of different topics, including ecology, economics, financial implementation, history, social realities, organizational realities & structures, policies (including sustainability), and legislation considerations. This course will seek to familiarize students with how land-use planning often involves lots of participants with different perspectives related to land use outcomes. The aims of this units are the students have (1) knowledge of the role of urban design as a discipline in the improvement and management of urban spaces and places (SPIA5-01), (2) capacity to read and understand drawings and plans, including visualisation of the items represented, and to critique inadequate drawings (SPIA5- 02), (3) capacity to produce basic urban design plans at a level showing an understanding of the main components of urban design plan production and implementation (SPIA5-03), and (4) capacity to write policy and draft controls relevant to the achievement of urban design outcomes (SPIA5-04).

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, you should be able to: a. Utilize research skills to evaluate theories, processes and significant topics in Materials and Principles of Construction (GPIA-1, GPIA-2, GPIA-3, GPIA-4, GPIA-5) b. Analyse critical issues determining the choice and application of materials and competent technologies for construction-related activities (GPIA-3, GPIA-4, GPIA-5, GPIA-6, GPIA-7). c. Research on the development strategies that could be used to reduce reliance on imported goods and techniques for building purposes and more resilience in indigenous, uniformly standardized materials and methods. (GPIA-1, GPIA-2, GPIA-3, GPIA-4, GPIA-5) d. Develop the ability to select and apply methods and materials effectively (GPIA-3, GPIA-4, GPIA-5, GPIA-6, GPIA-7). e. Research on types of innovative, non-conventional, environmentally sound and sustainable product as well as technique as a substitute and competitive alternate technology (GPIA-2, GPIA-3, GPIA-4, GPIA-5, GPIA-6, GPIA-7).
