Unit Name: Coastal Planning and Management

Description: Coastal planning and management involves examining the social, economic and environmental considerations that affect the coastal zone. Population growth, demographic change, infrastructure demands and climate change are key issues that will be discussed in the unit. Community engagement in that process of coastal planning will also be addressed. The theory of integrated coastal management together with leading practice in implementation will be further explored. The catchment to coast to marine continuum will underpin the unit learning outcomes

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, you should be able to: a. Comprehend the coastal zone and coastal environment (GPIA-1, GPIA-2, GPIA-3) b. Criticize some issues in coastal management (GPIA-4, GPIA-5, GPIA-6) c. Understand and apply concepts of coastal planning and management (GPIA-4, GPIA-5, GPIA-6, GPIA- d. Apply major coastal management and planning technique (GPIA-4, GPIA-5, GPIA-6, GPIA-7) e. Apply regional management of coastal resources, local coastal management and creative coastal development (GPIA-4, GPIA-5, GPIA-6, GPIA-7)
