Unit Name: Urban Heritage Conservation

Description: This course will examines the history and theory of historic preservation, focusing in Fiji, but with reference to traditions and practices in other countries. The class is designed to examine the largely untold history of the historic preservation movement in this country, and explore how laws, public policies and cultural attitudes shape how we preserve or do not preserve the built environment. The course will give students a grounding in the history, theory and practice of historic preservation, but is not an applied, technical course.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, you should be able to: a. Understand history of urban conservation and planning (GPIA-1, GPIA-2, GPIA-3, GPIA-4) b. Analyse the layered dimension of urban conservation (GPIA-3, GPIA-4, GPIA-5, GPIA-6) c. Generate building toolkit in urban heritage conservation (GPIA-3, GPIA-4, GPIA-5, GPIA-6, GPIA-7, GPIA-8) d. Researching and mapping the historic urban landscape (GPIA-2, GPIA-3)
