Unit Name: Policy Practice (Environmental Planning and Management)

Description: Environmental planning and management are focused on decision-making processes and practices that aim to mitigate human impact on complex natural systems. This unit provides students with a comprehensive understanding of how the environment informs planning and management by introducing tools, principles, ethics, and approaches to the assessment of impacts and risk that are central to the work of individuals, business, government and NGOs. The aims of this course are the students can take a collaborative role in the production and implementation of environmental plans, whether these are discrete plans, components of other plans, or by providing environmental planning analyses of others’ plans or actions (SPIA2) by : (1) having knowledge of the main principles of sustainable development, ecological systems and key issues such as climate change (SPIA2-01), (2) understanding of natural hazards and planning approaches to managing those hazards (SPIA2-02), (3) having the capacity to produce basic environmental plans at a level demonstrating understanding of broader principles and policy implementation (SPIA2-03) and (4) having the capacity to practice and critically link plans into wider frameworks of environmental action and influence at a variety of scales (SPIA2-04)

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, you should be able to: a. Utilize research skills to evaluate theories, processes and significant topics in environmental planning and management (GPIA-2) b. Analyze critical issues determining the application of environment-based strategies (GPIA-3, GPIA-4) c. Research on the strategies that could be used to control pollution and the effect of development (GPIA-2, GPIA-4, GPIA-5, GPIA-6) d. Develop the ability to apply environmental planning and management methods and tools effectively (GPIA-2, GPIA-4, GPIA-5, GPIA-6) e. Research on types of environmental audit as well acquire audit protocols (GPIA-2, GPIA-4, GPIA-5, GPIA-6)
