Unit Name: Planning Analysis Methods

Description: This course consist of two big theme, first is about data collection and second is about data analysis that have not been covered in other units. Urban and regional planners will collect and use information to examine a broad range of social, environmental, land use and economic issues. This course focuses on the what, why, who and how of qualitative and quantitative research methods and mixed methods research design relevant to planning and related applied disciplines. It is designed as a survey methods that provides beginning opportunity to prepare for their professional project or research. Through the course, students will learn about and apply each step of the qualitative and quantitative data collection and descriptive analysis. The second theme deals with applied research methods for urban and regional planning analysis and it aims to provide the students with some basic techniques for analyzing the potential for redevelopment of a community or a larger area, such as a county or a region. The course will be organized in some major areas: regional economic analysis using the economic base multiplier and shift share analysis and also input-output analysis for planning purposes, community planning methods, participatory follow up and evaluation and strategic planning. The aims for this course are: (1) The students have capacity to apply and develop planning knowledge to identify problems, devise ways to investigate and solve these problems drawing on research-based evidence, and producing solutions as the basis for appropriate action (CPIA1-08), (2) Apply theoretical and technical planning skills to unfamiliar or emergent circumstances, even with incomplete information (CPIA1-09), (3) students have knowledge of the main types of plan-making processes and implementation techniques including strategic planning, statutory planning, urban design and place making together with the capacity to select appropriate processes and implementation methods according to the scale and circumstance of intervention (CPIA2-04), (4) capability to perform key planning tasks via strategic and statutory frameworks (CPIA2-07), (5) ability to gather qualitative and quantitative data relevant to the planning circumstances, even if incomplete, to analyse it and to communicate its relevance and any shortcomings of findings appropriately (CPIA2-08), (6) capacity to review, evaluate and monitor plans and planning processes (CPIA2-10) and (7) capacity to critique plans, planning tools, built environment proposals, and outcomes as necessary (CPIA2-11).
