Unit Name: Population and Urban Studies
Description: This course will discuss about demography and urban phenomena’s. Demography as the science of population, is concerned with virtually everything that influences, or can be influenced by, population size, distribution, processes, structure, or characteristics. This course pays particular attention to the causes and consequences of population change. Changes in fertility, mortality, migration, technology, lifestyle and culture have dramatically affected to the urban area and country. An understanding of these is important as business, government, and individuals deal with the demands of the changing population. General aim of this course that students can take a collaborative role in the production and implementation of social and cultural plans, whether these are discrete social plans, components of other plans, or by providing social planning analyses of others’ plans or actions (SPIA3), such as: (1)Knowledge of the main sources of information about communities, including census and survey data (SPIA3-01), (2) Ability to undertake basic primary and secondary data gathering and analysis utilising quantitative and qualitative methods (SPIA3-02), (3) Knowledge of basic demographic statistics, analysis and presentation (SPIA3-03) and (4) Working knowledge of principles and issues of social impact analysis (SPIA3-04).
Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, you should be able to: a. Understand about demography concepts and population actors (GPIA-1 &GPIA-2) b. Identify the sources of demographic information (GPIA-1 &GPIA-2) c. Generate demographic structure (GPIA-3) d. Formulate population projection and distribution (GPIA-3 & GPIA-5) e. Criticize the heterogeneous in demography (GPIA-3) f. Diagnose urban phenomenon and the impact in planning (GPIA-3 & GPIA 5)
