Unit Name: Geographic Information System I

Description: The unit is designed to accommodate students from a variety of research backgrounds and with no previous Geographic Information systems (GIS) experience. The unit is theoretical as well as practical. The theoretical part deals with the underlying theory, and how it is implemented using GIS software. The practical lab sessions give students the opportunity to learn for themselves how to put that theory into practice, gaining hands?on experience with ESRI ArcGIS software, the most popular GIS and an industry-standard in many fields. The general aim of this unit is the students have knowledge and capacity to utilize relevant technical tools for data analysis and mapping, knowledge of quantitative methods, spatial mapping and relevant work production software (CPIA1-03).

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, you should be able to: a. Acquire knowledge of theories, processes and significant topics in Geographic Information Systems (GPIA-1& GPIA-2) b. Utilisation of Geographic Information System software (ArcGIS) and other support software (Excel, Paint and Corel Draw or Photoshop) (GPIA-5) c. Evaluate the steps involved in mapping and map design (GPIA-5) d. Examine concepts of map projections and coordinate systems (GPIA-5) e. Evaluate the different types of data models. (GPIA-3) f. Diagnose GIS methods and tools effectively and efficiently (GPIA-3) g. Applied the data in ArcGIS software. (GPIA-7)
