Unit Name: Surgery IV

Description: Having passed the second year exit exam, SGR900 is the final year of the masters of medicine in surgery. This course is offered to be flexible such that candidates can be apprentices to specialists either in Fiji, or in their home countries, where a suitable supervisor is available, or in an overseas location approved by FNU No formative assessments during this year but trainees are expected to maintain a high standard of health care and practice to support any health care system. This includes the training of the other registrars and interns in the surgical management of patients. An additional mandatory research project is to be undertaken and must be completed before one is expected to graduate with the Master of Medicine degree.

Learning Target Outcomes: By the end of this course, students should be able to: 1. Practice competency in evaluation and management of acute and chronic surgical presentations taking into consideration patient safety and risk 2. Practice effective gathering, understanding and dissemination of relevant information, support and counselling to patients, families and carers through effective verbal and non-verbal communication. 3. Demonstrate caring, compassion, cultural sensitivity and professional conduct in daily practice. 4. Demonstrate safe and ethical practice. 5. Practice life-long commitment to on-going learning and professional development by participating in continuing medical education (CME) activities and by sharing relevant medical knowledge to fellow workers including other doctors, medical students, nurses, health educators and also to the general public. 6. Demonstrate competence in performing various surgical procedures, maintaining dexterity and technical skills understanding own limitations. 7. Demonstrate management and leadership qualities by setting and maintaining standards and supporting and inspiring subordinates and colleagues 8. Demonstrate effective judgement and decision making by considering options, planning ahead and implementing and reviewing decisions. 9. Practice team-work and collaboration through active participation in clinical teams.
