Unit Name: Surgery III

Description: This course builds on or SGR820 and at the end of the year, trainees will be required to sit for the exit examination.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate clinical competency in the management of abdominal wall hernias, varicocele and testicular tumors. 2. Demonstrate thorough understanding of genetics of breast cancer, male breast cancer, gynaecomastia, management of axillay lymph nodes including sentinel lympnode biopsy and adjuvant treatment of breast cancer. 3. Demonstrate thorough understanding of management of colorectal polyps, colorectal cancers and cancers of the anal canal. 4. Demonstrate clinical competency in the management of intraabdominal haemorrhage. 5. Demonstrate clinical competency in the management of diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands including MEN syndromes. 6. Demonstrate thorough understanding of management of neck lumps, cleft lip, cleft palate, complex head injury, hydrocephalus and brain abscess. 7. Demonstrate clinical expertise in the management of critically ill surgical patient. 8. Demonstrate clinical expertise in the management of benign skin lesions and thorough understanding of diagnosis and management of skin cancers. 9. Demonstrate thorough understanding of small bowel tumors including neuroendocrine tumors and bowel ischaemia. 10. Demonstrate ability to summarize various cancers. 11. Demonstrate clinical expertise to resuscitate and manage trauma to the abdomen, chest wall and pelvis. 12. Demonstrate thorough understanding of choledochal cysts, acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. 13. Demonstrate clinical competency in the management of gastoesophageal reflux disorder and demonstrate thorough understanding of management of esophageal perforations, cancer of esophagus and stomach and gastrointestinal stromal tumors. 14. Demonstrate thorough understanding of management of vascular anurysms, varicose veins and DVT. 15. Demonstrate clinical competency in diagnosis and management of diabetic foot sepsis. 16. Demonstrate thorough understanding of management of various orthopedic conditions and trauma.
