Unit Name: Surgery II

Description: This course is heavily clinically oriented, where prospective general surgeons build on the skills of the seventeen modules understudied in SGR801.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate thorough understanding of normal anatomy and physiology as well as pathophysiology, investigations, differential diagnosis and management of abdominal wall and retroperitoneal disorders. 2. Demonstrate thorough understanding of normal anatomy and physiology as well as pathophysiology, investigations, diagnosis, and management of benign and malignant diseases of the breast. 3. Demonstrate thorough understanding of normal anatomy and physiology as well as pathophysiology, investigations, diagnosis, and management of benign and malignant diseases of the colon, rectum and anal canal. 4. Demonstrate clinical competency diagnose, investigate and resuscitate acute abdominal emergencies. 5. Demonstrate thorough understanding of normal anatomy and physiology as well as pathophysiology, investigations, diagnosis, and management of benign and malignant diseases of the endocrine glands. 6. Demonstrate thorough understanding of normal anatomy and physiology as well as pathophysiology, investigations, diagnosis, and management of benign and malignant diseases of upper digestive tract. 7. Demonstrate clinical competency in assessment and management of critically ill surgical patient with sepsis. 8. Demonstrate clinical competency in assessment and management of benign and malignant conditions affecting skin and soft tissues. 9. Demonstrate thorough understanding of normal anatomy and physiology as well as pathophysiology, investigations, diagnosis, and management of small intestinal disorders. 10. Demonstrate thorough understanding of principles of surgical oncology. 11. Demonstrate clinical competency in assessment and management of trauma victims. 12. Demonstrate thorough understanding of normal anatomy and physiology as well as pathophysiology, investigations, diagnosis, and management of benign and malignant diseases of hepatobiliary system and pancreas. 13. Demonstrate thorough understanding of normal anatomy and physiology as well as pathophysiology, investigations, diagnosis, and management of benign and malignant diseases of esophagus and stomach. 14. Demonstrate thorough understanding of anatomy, pathophysiology, investigations, diagnosis and management of diseases of arterial, venous and lymphatic system. 15. Demonstrate thorough understanding of pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of diabetic foot sepsis. 16. Demonstrate thorough understanding of anatomy, pathophysiology, investigations, diagnosis and management of benign and malignant diseases and traumatic conditions affecting bones and joints.
