Unit Name: Pathological Science

Description: This course focuses on understanding general pathology and pathologic basis of diseases. The first semester courses include general pathology science of Anatomic Pathology and Chemical pathology allowing candidates to relate cellular and tissue changes to biochemical changes and chemical analysis that are offered in the laboratory. In Semester 2 the focus will be on Haematological disorders and Transfusion Medicine. During this period, students will be exposed to the theory and practical aspects of these 2 areas of pathology. There will be teaching sessions in the form of lectures and seminars, slides review, journal review, clinico-pathological correlation sessions and small group discussion on selected topics. The student is also expected to learn independently through case studies, bench work and patient management.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate relevant and sustained theoretical and applied clinical knowledge and skills of basic pathological sciences in human cellular and tissue changes and relate these to diseases\' clinical presentations, laboratory investigations (Anatomic and Chemical Pathology) and treatment. 2.Demonstrate systematic and objective analysis of wounds and injuries from diverse sources and context, relating them to possible causative weapons for medicolegal purposes. 3.Demonstrate understanding of basic principles of laboratory investigations in common haematological disorders relating changes to diseases, clinical presentations, laboratory investigations and treatment while exhibiting excellent communication skills to facilitate inclusive discourse with colleagues and stakeholders. 4.Demonstrate understanding of good and safe laboratory practice in Transfusion Medicine with resilience, flexibility and innovating responses relating to investigations and treatment whilst showing respect for inclusiveness and diversity of opinions. 5. Prepare cases for further consultations and formulate advice relevant to patient care with demonstration of professionalism that encompasses compassion, fairness, equity, respect, integrity, confidentiality, a commitment to justice adhering to codes of conduct and ethics.
