Unit Name: Psychiatry II

Description: Psychiatry is the branch of Medicine focussed on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental emotional and behavioural disorders. Psychiatry is often divided into various subspecialties viz. Child Psychiatry (dealing with mental health of children and adolescents), General adult Psychiatry (dealing with mental health issues of adults in general), Geriatric Psychiatry (dealing with mental health issues of elderly), Addiction Psychiatry (deals with substance associated mental health problems), Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry (deals with mental health issues secondary to general medical condition and principles of liaising with other treating team), Forensic Psychiatry (deals with diagnosis and treatment of mental disorder in context to criminal justice system) and Community Psychiatry (focusses on detection, prevention, early intervention and rehabilitation of mental health disorders as they develop in a community). PSY820 is the first year of the MMED - Psychiatry programme. It utilizes the prior knowledge, skills and attitudes demonstrated during the Postgraduate Diploma in Mental Health, to enable the candidate to function as a trainee specialist.
