Unit Name: Sheetmetal Theory A

Description: This unit brings together and extends the technology developed through earlier workshop practical exercises. Upon the completion of this unit, the student will be able to identify all types of hand tools and machines required for general sheet metal works with sound knowledge of safety procedures involved whilst using them. The content covers all the types of joints, safe edges, beading, swaging etc. processes involved and also different jointing techniques on sheet metals.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Explain and Identity the various uses of sheet metal in terms of different materials, sizes (gauges). 2. Express the knowledge on how to use the sheet metal machines/hand tools according to the operator’s manual and understand the safety procedures in the workshops, and maintenance of the machines and hand tools. 3. Explain basic procedures and craftsmanship in sheet metal work as to describe the various jointing methods of sheet metal. 4. Describe the importance of safe edges, beadings, and swaging on sheet metal articles. 5. Explain self-secured joints, reverting, grooving and soldering.
