Unit Name: Plant Pathology

Description: This course allows students to be able to know the definition of microorganisms, pathogens, plant pathogens and diseases. Introduction to important plant pathogenic organisms such as fungi, bacteria, phytoplasma, spyroplasmas, viruses and viroids with examples of diseases caused by them. Introduction: Definition and objective of plant pathology. Survival and dispersion of plant pathogens. Plant Disease epidermiology. General principles of plant diseases management. Plant Quarantine and Inspection rules and regulations in Fiji. Economic importance, symptoms, cause, epidermiology and disease cycle and integrated management of diseases of rice, maize, sugarcane, sesamum, ground nut, pigeon pea, french bean, cowpea, taro, cassava, yams, sweet potatoes, potatoes, vegetables: chinese cabbage, english cabbage, cauliflower, radish, lettuce, cucurbits: watermelon, pumpkin, cucumber, bottle gourd and fruit crops: jackfruit, breadfruit, citrus, mango, guavas, papaya, bananas, pineapple and chestnut. Surveillance and sampling of diseased plants and estimation of its damage.
