Unit Name: Post Anaesthesia Recovery Room Nursing
Description: This unit aims to expand the students’ awareness and understanding of the evolving anaesthetic and post anaesthetic care unit (PARU) nursing roles. Through the development of specialised knowledge, students will advance their clinical expertise to optimize care of the patient during the anaesthetic and post-anaesthesia phases. Attention is paid to developing an understanding of the specific needs of surgical patients during the anaesthetic and post anaesthesia phases. Successful completion of the subject will enable students to work within a highly structured and developed area of complex health management as members of a functioning interdisciplinary perioperative team. It also provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate technical competence at a proficient level. This subject facilitates integration between theory and practice in this specialty area of nursing and closely aligns with local, regional and international standards including the Australian College of Perioperative Nurses (ACORN) standards.
Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Critically examine the roles and responsibilities of the anaesthetic and post anaesthetic care unit (PARU) nurse in the perioperative environment. 2. Integrate specialized knowledge in anaesthetic and post anaesthetic Recovery unit (PARU) nursing practice to enable proficient perioperative patient care. 3. Demonstrate specialized knowledge on a range of nursing assessments and interventions to enable high level care across clinical scenarios with varying levels of complexity. 4. Apply concepts of anatomy and pathophysiology to patient management during the anaesthetic and post-anaesthesia phases. 5. Utilize the specialized skills and evidence-based practices to engage in best practice to promote quality nursing care. 6. Provide sensitive and high-quality end-of-life care to patients and their families.
