Unit Name: Intraoperative Nursing

Description: This unit focuses on exploring the theoretical components of intraoperative nursing. The content of this course will include basic concepts of perioperative nursing, principles of surgical asepsis, perioperative nursing roles, infection control, and operating suite planning. The ethical and legal issues related to perioperative nursing, professional issues. Also, the anatomy, pathophysiology and surgical techniques for general, gynaecological and obstetrics, urology, plastics and reconstructive surgery, paediatric, endocrine surgery, vascular surgery and cardiac surgery, ENT surgery and Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic surgery, general trauma and orthopaedic trauma are explored. Successful completion of this unit enables the student to assess and manage the pre-, intra- and post-operative patient.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Develop and demonstrate perioperative nursing knowledge of principles of surgical asepsis 2. Develop and demonstrate perioperative nursing knowledge of the perioperative PON nursing roles: instrument and circulating nurses. 3. Develop and demonstrate perioperative nursing knowledge of principles of infection control and operating suite planning 4. Apply concepts of anatomy and pathophysiology to patient management during pre- operative, intra-operative and post-operative phases of LIST SURGERY TIMES 5. Demonstrate knowledge that covers the principles of intraoperative management of patients with common surgical presentations and conditions that are found in Fiji and other Pacific nations. 6. Utilise the specialized skills and evidence-based practices to engage in best practice in role of instrument and circulating nurse and promote quality nursing care.
