Unit Code: PME460

Unit Name: Pumps & Valves

Description: The course description of this unit is to enable the development of elementary knowledge and skills required for maintaining mechanical valves, electrical solenoid Valves, Positive displacement pumps, dynamic centrifugal pumps, and compressors. This course offers the development of intermediate scientific knowledge and skills in servicing pumps and valves. It also covers the effect of water treatment on Plant Machines and the effect of Pollution from Industrial Plants.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, you should be able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of the responsibilities of an engineering technician generally to service dynamic centrifugal pumps, positive displacement pumps, and reciprocating pumps for typical applications and the impacts of any relevant legislation or regulation and identifies relevant steps to be taken to ensure compliance and understanding of water treatment for domestic and industrial use and knowledge of construction, application and produce a schedule of a planned maintenance programme for the equipment of a typical mechanical engineering workshop. 2. Dismantle, examine, service/repair and re-assemble machines and identify components for different types of maintenance schedules to propose possible solutions and make informed choices between alternatives and justifies approach in cost analysis for the maintenance of a particular piece of equipment. 3. Consider contextual factors, in particular, ensures health and safety, and prevent the danger of pollution from industrial waste. 4. Understand the range of tools available, selects a suitable tool and basics of industrial instrumentation, application, calibration and maintenance.
