Unit Code: PME421

Unit Name: Bearing, Lubrication, Filters, and Seals

Description: The purpose of this unit is to enable the development of elementary knowledge and skills required for the installation and maintenance of Bearings, Lubrication and Seals. It covers the selection, fitting, removal, examine, repair, and installation of plain and anti-friction bearings. The types of lubrication systems, lubricants and the effects of speed, load and temperature on the lubrication system. Select and install the appropriate filters, gaskets and seals. The unit Introduces preventive and corrective maintenance of bearings and seals found in industrial equipment. It Includes sleeve bearings, roller bearings, sealing and lubrication practices for bearings. Also included are different types of filters used in Industrial Engineering. Also covered are the highlights on the use of equipment and lubricant manufacturers\' specifications, equipment history and equipment maintenance logs.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, you should be able to: 1. Relate the knowledge of the construction of various types of Rolling Element Bearings, selection practice of fitting, removal and alignment for particular bearing applications. Remove, examine, repair, and install plain and anti-friction bearings to acceptable running conditions. Relate the knowledge of the construction of various types of Friction Bearings, selection practice of fitting, removal and alignment for particular bearing applications. Remove, examine, repair, and install plain and anti-friction bearings to acceptable running conditions. 2. Identify the Basic Knowledge of different types of lubrication systems, lubricants and the effects of speed, load and temperature on the lubrication system. Identify the characteristics, types of wear, their causes and adjustments to be compensated in Rolling Element bearings and Friction Bearings slides. 3. Determine the different types of Rolling Element Bearings, Friction Bearing applications, outlining their procedure for fitting onto shafts and housings and state the reasons for internal/external clearances on bearings as per machine specifications and the requirements of good sealing practice, and differentiate between static and dynamic seal materials for specific purposes. Select and install the appropriate filters and seals. Remove examine, repair, and install different types of seals and gaskets. 4. Interpret between full-film lubrication, boundary lubrication, their construction and applications stating where they are of a particular advantage. Identify lubrication faults and maintain different types of lubrication systems and lubricants.
