Unit Name: Lifting & Material Handling

Description: The purpose of this unit is to enable the development of elementary knowledge and skills required for Machines, mechanical Plant installation and, materials handling of Plant equipment. This course offers the development of intermediate scientific knowledge and skills for mechanical plant trade trainees. Preparation to safely direct and move heavy objects by selecting the appropriate media, such as fibre rope, wire rope, or chain, in conjunction with the correct hardware and lifting devices, such as hoists and cranes. Emphasis on inspection, care, and maintenance of rigging equipment used in maintenance or production systems.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, you should be able to: 1. Exercise skills in lifting loads with safe working practice and the correct method and right tool for the job, and calculate SWL. 2. Compare and relate specification notes for the handling and storage of a variety of materials including transporting details, and quality control checks. 3. Explain drawings and instructions to describe the installation of specified equipment, including preparation of the working area. 4. Check for installation and inspection and handover of the plant including final alignment and adjustments.
