Unit Name: Basic Craft and Metal Work

Description: This course offers the development of intermediate scientific knowledge and skills for the selection and use of cutting tools, hand and power tools. The course covers the usage of measuring instruments and how to perform marking out. Techniques on how different types of files are used for different types of jobs, how to use a drilling machine and grind the correct angles on twist drills, and how to set up lathes, for parallel turning. The techniques used for sheet metal works and projects.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Check and Identify the hazards in the workshop environment and develop procedures for safe working practices. 2. Compare and select the safe use of hand and power tools, the function of different lathe parts, the selection of various cutting tools with suitable angles for different applications and explain the need for using cutting fluid. Apply knowledge and understanding of safe working practices in a fitting or machine shop, how to use a drilling machine and grind the correct angles on twist drills. 3. Check read measuring instruments and perform marking out, how to use and dress a grinding machine to grind a cutting tool. Demonstrate the various cutting angles and the effects of changing this angle. 4. Exercise how to set up lathes and grind threading cutting tools for cutting threads, the properties of taper, taper turning methods, the term related to eccentric turning, applications and procedures for marking and production.
