Unit Name: Basic Machining

Description: This course offers the development of intermediate scientific knowledge and skills for the selection and use of cutting tools, hand and power tools. The course covers the usage of measuring instruments and how to perform marking out. Techniques on how a grinding machine is dressed and used to grind a cutting tool, how to use a drilling machine and grind the correct angles on twist drills, how to set up lathes, for parallel turning and to grind threading cutting tools for cutting threads.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, you should be able to: 1. Check the hazards in the workshop environment and develop procedures for safe working practices and apply knowledge and understanding to select, safe use of hand and power tools. 2. Describe how to read measuring instruments and perform marking out and apply knowledge and understanding of the function of different lathe parts, selection of various cutting tools with suitable angles for different applications and explain the need for using cutting fluid. Demonstrate how to use and dress a grinding machine to grind a cutting tool. 3. Explain how to use a drilling machine and grind the correct angles on twist drills and apply knowledge on safe working practices in a fitting or machine shop. 4. Exercise how to set up lathes and grind threading cutting tools for cutting threads and demonstrate the various cutting angles and the effects of changing this angle. Knowledge and understanding of the properties of taper, taper turning methods., the term related to eccentric turning, applications and procedures for marking and production.
