Unit Code: PHY704

Unit Name: Quantum Mechanics and Atomic Physics

Description: This course is intended mainly for students majoring in physics. Within its first two decades of the 20th century, it was recognized that principles of classical physics cannot explain the properties of atoms and molecules. This resulted in continuous development of new theories and mathematical tools, which later came to be known as Quantum Mechanics and helped in explaining the properties of the atom, the atomic nucleus and the particles of which it is composed. Quantum theory also explains the properties of molecules and solids. The course presupposes knowledge of elementary differential and integral calculus. Knowledge of ordinary differential equations is useful in topics related to quantum mechanics.
