Unit Code: PHY510

Unit Name: Oscillations, Waves and Optics

Description: This unit aims to provide students with the basic concepts and principles of oscillatory motion, waves and optics to strengthen the understanding of the concepts and principles of Physics through a broad range of interesting applications to the real world. Practical sessions will be used to enhance the theoretical concepts studied in lectures.

Learning Target Outcomes: The course will involve theoretical and practical aspects. As a result of successfully completing this unit, the students will be able to: 1. Distinguish the simple harmonic oscillations, damped oscillations and forced oscillations 2. Apply the fundamental concepts in wave motion, superposition of waves and standing waves for sound and Light. 3. Analyze and discuss the Maxwell’s equations, its significance and applications in electromagnetism. 4. Analyze the light propagation through media, and applications in our daily life and working principles of simple optical instruments. 5. Demonstrate the interference and diffraction of waves and applications of constructive and destructive interference in power generation and distribution
