Unit Name: Leadership and Rehabilitation

Description: This practical and interactive course is designed to strengthen the leadership effectiveness of physiotherapists. The course begins by studying the core management functions of involved with facilitating meetings, balancing workload and project management and then transitions into an exploration of the essential elements of leadership in rehabilitation including emotional intelligence, practical leadership skills, and leadership assessment. Personal and practical leadership skill development is enhanced and reinforced through an in person week long intensive leadership development session. Leadership Development Groups (LDGs), in place throughout the course, will further optimize learner leadership effectiveness through tutorials, experiential exercises, self-reflection, group discussions and feedback. This course is suitable for physiotherapists in leadership positions and clinical roles.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Provide understanding of the key elements of leadership in rehabilitation and compare / contrast leadership styles. 2. Utilize knowledge of core management functions of meeting facilitation, time management, and project management. 3. Apply common leadership styles / approaches to the physiotherapy setting. 4. Explore the concept of emotional intelligence and apply to leadership development in the physiotherapy setting. 5. Demonstrate understanding of leadership skills essential for physiotherapists and demonstrate the application of these skills in physiotherapy practice and leadership settings. 6. Summarize, compare and contrast the methods of leadership assessment. 7. Generate an individualized personal leadership development plan.
