Unit Name: Physiotherapy in the Special Population

Description: This course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to focus on managing conditions and issues in special populations such as paediatrics, women\\\'s health and gerontology in the primary and secondary health care settings. Topics will include: 1. Conditions pertaining to paediatrics, women\\\'s health and gerontology. 2. Physiotherapy evidence based assessment and intervention specific to the special population. 3. Prevention of complications related to special populations.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Discuss Normal Development for pediatrics. 2. Apply the knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology and diagnostic sciences to distinguish and analyse paediatric conditions. 3. Conduct Examination and assessment of patients with acute and chronic pediatric conditions in the acute, outpatient and rehabilitation settings. 4. Provide appropriate evidence informed management strategies of pediatrics patients with acute and chronic pediatric conditions in the acute, outpatients, rehabilitation and community settings. 5. Demonstrate patient education for the prevention of complications and conditions for management of pediatric patients. 6. Apply the knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology and diagnostic sciences to distinguish, analyse and manage common conditions affecting women. 7. Assess, develop and implement appropriate management for ante-natal and postnatal and gynaecological problems. 8. Analyse socio-economic issues and major problems directly affecting older adults. 9. Demonstrate understanding of the normal and abnormal ageing process and discuss various aging theories that affect services to older adults. 10. Apply problem solving skills and critical thinking to provide agreed, realistic, attainable long and short term goals of management - PT/OT/SLT
