Unit Name: Pathology

Description: This course provide students with a basic knowledge of various diseases, about their causes, progression , various morphological changes and biochemical alterations leading to various signs and symptoms in human body. Students will be able to corelate between the basic sciences and clinical subjects. Basic knowledge of pathology enable the students to reinforce and develop professional skills and knowledge in a variety of clinical settings and use various physiotherapy techniques to promote, maintain and restore physical function of the body. It also helps to improve the physical, mental and social wellness of diseases and healthy persons including themselves.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Describe the etiology, pathogenesis, morphological changes leading to various sign and symptoms of a disease. Describe the various types of necrosis and healing process with their complications 2. Differentiate the various types of injuries leading to inflammation, reversible and irreversible cell injuries including adaptations, intracellular accumulation, necrosis and apoptosis. 3. Interpret generalized and localized oedema and haemodynamic disorders like hyperemia, congestion, ischemia, thromboembolism and shock 4. Define various growth abnormalities and neoplasia, classification of tumors, their etiology, biological behavior and differences between the benign and malignant tumors 5. Define and relate the various blood cells related disorders, anaemia, leukemia and platelets and their systemic effects. 6. Utilize the basic knowledge of congenital and acquired cardiac diseases especially myocardial infarction & rheumatic heart disease. 7. Identify the chronic obstructive lung diseases, pneumonia and carcinoma and utilize the knowledge during physiotherapy of the patients. 8. Classify the various types of jaundice and relate the complications of hepatitis and cirrhosis. 9. Relate the peptic ulcer disease and gastrointestinal carcinoma and their complications. 10. Identify and classify the various types of osteomyelitis, arthritis, metabolic disorders and tumors of skeletal system. 11. Outline the hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism and analyze the chronic complications of diabetes mellitus. 12. Name the infective lesions of the brain and meninges and relate the complications of stroke and motor neuron diseases. 13. Label the skin malignancies and distinguish the various myopathies. 14. Identify the sexually transmitted infections, pelvic inflammatory diseases and their complications.
