Unit Name: Pharmacology

Description: This course provide learners with basic knowledge of Pharmacology to guide the Physiotherapy management of patients. The coverage will include Introduction of Pharmacology, Autonomic Nervous System, Cardiovascular and Respiratory Pharmacology, Neuropharmacology, Skeletal muscles relaxant, anaesthetics, analgasics,anti-inflamatory drugs, and Drugs used in Geriatrics, pediatrics and women’s health.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Discuss the general drug principles: Introduction, Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics, 2. Classify and discuss the mechanisms of action of drugs affecting the Autonomic Nervous system: Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Systems 3. Classify and discuss the mechanisms of action of cardiovascular drugs: Antihypertensive drugs, Drugs used to treat Congestive Cardiac Failure, Antiarrhythmic Drugs, Ischemic Heart Disease, Lipid lowering drugs, Anticoagulantsand Thrombolytics, 4. Describe the mechanisms of action of drugs used to treat obstructive airway diseases, allergic rhinitis, pneumonia 5. Classify and discuss the mechanisms of action of CNS drugs: sedative-hypnotic drugs, antidepressants, antipsychotic drugs, antiepileptic drugs and drug treatment for Parkinson\'s disease. 6. Explain the types skeletal muscle relaxants, discuss their mechanisms of action and that of Anaesthetics. 7. Classify the antibiotics and discuss their general mechanisms of action 8. Discuss the mechanisms of action of non-narcotic and narcotic analgesics 9. Classify immunosuppressant drugs and drug treatments for Gout and discuss their mechanisms of action. 10. Classify treatments for diabetes and discuss their mechanisms of action 11. Describe the general principles of drug use in special populations: Geriatric and Paediatrics Pharmacology, Women health.
