Unit Name: Exercise Nutrition & Psychology

Description: This course provides an introduction to Exercise Nutrition and Psychology as a theoretical and applied discipline. It will address major nutritional and psychological issues, providing you with a broader knowledge and understanding of the complexities and dynamics that can exist for both individuals and groups in the realm exercise. A major focus of the course is the development of practical skills and interventions that can be applied to these settings with the aim of positively influencing the behaviour, exercise performance, and level of participation of an individual or group.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Identify food groups and nutrient components. 2. Describe specific nutrient needs of individuals across the lifespan. 3. Describe the role of nutrition for health, sports, and exercise performance 4. Describe the role and function of macro and micro-nutrients, nutrient deficiencies and nutrient toxicity. 5. Identify key dietary sources of macro and micro-nutrients and compare to dietary standards 6. Evaluate sports supplement use among individuals 7. Apply hydration assessment techniques to developing intervention strategies 8. Identify, explain, and apply the major concepts, theories and strategies used in sport and exercise psychology 9. Identify and describe a range of psychological issues and strategies for athletes/individuals in exercise settings 10. Recognise, describe, and explain the influence of psychological factors on the behaviour, performance, and level of participation of both individuals and groups in exercise settings 11. Identify, evaluate and explain the appropriate strategies and interventions that are used to address a range of performance issues faced in exercise contexts
