Unit Name: Introduction to Health & Wellness

Description: This course provides students with a basic understanding on the role and responsibilities of physiotherapists for the promotion of health & wellness, with the main focus on Physical Activity and Fitness related components for Health. The course will enable students to gain an understanding of the fundamental concepts of health &wellness as theoretical bases underlying behaviour change and how physical activity and fitness can contribute to achieving optimal health & wellness with necessary skills and knowledge to enable an adherence to active and fit lifestyles. These concepts will be applied to improving health & wellness at both an individual and societal level. The student will also learn to address the broader society and population context and issues that impact upon physiotherapy practice underpinned by an internationally accepted socio-ecological model of health and wellness.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Describe the basic principles of the relation between Health & Wellness and Physical activity related fitness. 2. Discuss the role of physical activity and fitness in achieving and maintaining optimal quality of life throughout the lifespan. 3. Identify and describe the various models and theories of behaviour change and socio-economic determinants of health and demonstrate how this may be utilized in the prescription of Physical activity and fitness for Health & Wellness. 4. Explain and apply the basic knowledge and skills necessary for successful participation in physical activity and fitness for Health & Wellness. 5. Identify and distinguish the components of health related fitness, their relationship to each other and the contributions each make towards optimal health and wellbeing. 6. Explain the basic principles supporting effective and safe activity programming for optimal health and fitness. 7. Increase the awareness, knowledge and behaviour skills necessary to support a lifelong commitment to movement, physical activity and fitness for optimal health and wellbeing.
