Unit Code: PHT510

Unit Name: Functional Anatomy 1

Description: This course establishes the student knowledge of functional anatomy which is appropriate in the professional work of Physiotherapy. Coverage will include regional anatomy of the upper limbs, head and neck, spine, thorax, and and the abdomen. The course will be the foundational functional anatomy course for the respective specialist courses in the later years of study. Topics will include: • Introduction to Anatomy: organizational levels and terminologies. • Functional Anatomy of the upper limbs, head and neck, spine, thorax, and the abdominal region: Muscles, bones, nerves, vascular supply, and the lymphatic drainages. • Integumentary System.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Define and apply anatomical terminology, position, and planes of movement. 2. Identify and name the bones of the upper limbs, head and neck, spine, and thorax and locate and identify their landmarks, and describe the types, structure and function of bones. 3. Identify the types of joints in the upper limb, head and neck, spine, and thorax and their general functional characteristics. 4. Identify and describe the anatomy of specific joints, selected ligaments and bursa of the upper limbs, head and neck, spine, and thorax. 5. Identify and name the muscles of the upper limb, head and neck, spine, and thorax. 6. Identify the bony origins and insertions of each of the muscles of the upper limbs, head and neck, spine, and thorax. 7. Explain and demonstrate the action of each muscle based on knowledge of its origin and insertion, the joints it crosses, and the direction of its fibers. 8. Identify the antagonistic and synergistic muscle actions in the head and neck, spine, and thorax. 9. Name, identify and locate the structures of the major nerve plexuses of the head and neck, spine, and thorax. 10. Explain and describe the functional changes that occur in movement following lesions of major nerves or plexuses. 11. Explain and describe the basic organization of spinal nerves for motor innervation of skeletal muscles of the upper limbs, head and neck, spine, and thorax. 12. Identify the innervation and corresponding spinal segment of muscles of the upper limbs, head and neck, spine, and thorax. 13. Identify the nerves and spinal segments which supply cutaneous sensation of the upper limbs, head and neck, spine, and thorax. 14. Identify the general arteries, veins and lymphatic that supplies the upper limbs, head and neck, spine, and thorax regions.
