Unit Name: Pharmacotherapeutics 2

Description: Pharmaceutical care is the ‘reasonable provision of drug therapy for the purposes of achieving definite outcomes that improve patient’s quality of life\\\'. Pharmacotherapy is the provision of rational drug therapy to ensure optimal therapy and minimal adverse effects. The Applied Pharmacotherapeutics course PHM717 in Year 4 of the Pharmacy program builds upon students existing knowledge of physiology, pharmacology and Pharmacotherapeutics in Year 3, in order to develop the clinical knowledge and skills necessary to deliver pharmaceutical care. An emphasis is placed on the application of knowledge to evaluate and advice upon pharmacotherapy in clinical situations. Skills will be development for application in the practice setting, including clinical pharmacy skills, pharmaceutical care, patient monitoring (including review of laboratory data) and identification and resolution of drug related problems. Teaching activities will include lectures and tutorials with case studies. These will be supported by clinical rounds and tutorials at the Colonial War Memorial hospital to observe and work towards solving drug-related problems.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Explain the pathophysiology and pharmacotherapy (as well as non-drug therapy) of several common disease states. 2. Discuss the pharmacotherapy and nonpharmacological therapy of common diseases. 3. Discuss the principles of pharmacotherapy in particular patient groups. 4. Apply knowledge and clinical skills to patient care in an ethical manner. 5. Apply knowledge and clinical skills to problem solving in unfamiliar situations. 6. Select and interpret information from literature and apply this information in a clinical situation. 7. Demonstrate the ability to present information on the therapeutic use of drugs to fellow students and staff in a clear and professional manner. 8. Perform medication management reviews in an ethical manner.
