Unit Name: Pharmacy Practice 3

Description: The Pharmacy Practice course is offered to pharmacy students in their 4th year of study and has 3 major components which are theory, laboratory and industry attachment. This course is an extension of year 3 pharmacy practice and introduces students to the concepts of evidence based practice and develops their critical literature appraisal skills. This course prepares the student to apply knowledge from pharmacotherapeutics, pharmacology and pharmaceutics to achieve better health outcomes for patients. It also enables students to develop their communication skills in practical laboratory and viva sessions and also through experiential learning at their respective community and hospital pharmacy attachment sites. This course focuses on health maintenance and self-care, patient assessment and triage, counseling related to nonprescription medications, interpretation of common clinical laboratory tests and using the medical literature to guide pharmaceutical care, and problem-based patient presentation.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Discuss the principles of evidence based practice and critical literature appraisal. 2. Describe and participate in the various aspects of managing a hospital & community pharmacy. 3. Discuss the common vaccine-preventable travel diseases, their vaccines and major travel-related diseases and apply that information to give correct travel health advice to patients. 4. Discuss the role of complementary medicines in health care and advise patients/customers on the safe use of complementary medicines. 5. Describe the various reproductive health commodities, demonstrate its use and take relevant sexual history to provide appropriate counseling to clients. 6. Demonstrate compounding skills in preparing extemporaneous preparations applying suitable compounding techniques and principles with correct calculations to dispense and compound medications accurately. 7. Assess, interpret and process medication orders accurately, completely, and efficiently. 8. Demonstrate the use of Over the Counter (OTC) medicines by taking appropriate patient history, diagnosing, treating and providing counseling for simple medical conditions encountered in everyday practice. 9. Demonstrate effective communication skills using appropriate terminology and vocabulary when dealing with patients, colleagues and other health care professionals. 10. Discuss the properties and formulations of medicines and develop a top 50 list of drugs used at the hospital and demonstrate familiarity with each. 11. Identify different study designs and critically appraise primary and secondary research studies for validity, relevance and applicability. 12. Identify and use appropriate drug reference sources (electronic 7 3 Viva and printed) to retrieve drug-related information and apply that information to respond to drug information questions and to identify and/or resolve drug-related problems. 13. Assess ethical issues surrounding the practice of pharmacy and complementary medicine and create a best plan of action to optimize pharmacist – patient relationship in a given scenario. 14. Critically evaluate given cases of patients medical and medication history using established practice guidelines to make appropriate interventions. 15. Demonstrate professional behaviours and ethics of a practicing pharmacist.
