Unit Name: Pharmacotherapeutics

Description: The purpose of this course is to introduce the students to basic Pharmaceutical Care and services, more specifically in the clinical setting. It combines knowledge from the Basic Sciences disciplines of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology and the core Pharmacy courses of Pharmaceutics and Pharmacy Practice. PHM 711 is designed to train students to be clinical experts in drug use and to prepare pharmacy graduates for work in a variety of fields. The course also develops skills for graduates who will work as pharmacists in the community or in hospitals. However pharmacists can also be employed in government health departments where they may be involved in regulation and approval of new pharmaceutical products, providing drug information to other health professionals, hospitals and government departments, while others can undertake postgraduate training for careers as academics or researchers

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of the pharmacotherapeutic management of various diseases in the context of pharmaceutical care. 2. Apply knowledge of the mechanism of action of the drugs commonly used in the treatment of these diseases. 3. Demonstrate knowledge of the quality use of medicines issues associated with the treatment of these diseases 4. Demonstrate the ability to make informed and autonomous decisions about therapeutic responses and interventions that are based on clinical judgment, scientific evidence and patient determined outcomes 5. Discuss the principles of pharmacotherapy as applied to particular patient groups. 6. Apply knowledge and clinical skills to care of patients in an ethical manner. 7. Apply knowledge from therapeutic guidelines in making informed decisions in patient care. 8. Select and compound where necessary the appropriate drug in the correct dose, recommend appropriate delivery systems and use biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetic data in specialised situations.
