Unit Name: Drug Supply Management
Description: This course introduces students to the concept of drug management and the importance of fulfilling the components of the drug cycle in order to establish a sustainable medicine supply system in the first semester. In the second semester the course covers various drug distribution systems with the aim to reduce drug wastage, costs and its impact on the environment. Students will be introduced to topics concerning over-the-counter or non-prescription with a special focus on the pharmacists role in eliciting patient history, diagnosis and selection of appropriate OTC medicines, medication error & adverse drug reactions reporting.
Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Discuss the importance of each component of the drug management cycle in ensuring sustainability of supply 2. Explain the procurement cycle & major procurement methods and the principles of good procurement practices 3. Describe the various aspects of inventory management 4. Explain drug distribution management including monitoring of supply, distribution systems, security and storage 5. Discuss the policies around medicines use such as the National drug Policy, Essential Medicines List, Standard Treatment Guidleines and the role of NMTC 6. Summarize the principles of rational use of medicines and evaluating for irrational drug use 7. Discuss the drug distribution systems used by hospital pharmacy to ensure efficient supply of medicines to patients 8. Apply good management practice principles of controlling drug wastage and safe disposal of pharmaceutical waste 9. Discuss the principles and the role of pharmacists in safe prescribing, adverse drug reaction and medication error reporting 10. Explain good management principles to the storage, use, and handling of vaccines. 11. Evaluate and reflect on hospital pharmacy and drug management practices 12. Demonstrate use of Over the Counter (OTC) medicines and the ability to diagnosis and treat simple medical conditions encountered in everyday practice. 13. Demonstrate effective communication skills when dealing with patients, colleagues and other health care professionals.
