Unit Name: Pharmaceutics 2
Description: This course deals with the background of drug preparation, assuring quality control of drug manufacturing and use, policies surrounding drug use and keeping updated on information regarding new drugs. This subject is important to the Pharmacy student in the future role of administrative functions involving drug supply and distribution. The technical aspects of types of drug preparations, ensuring these are safely stored and handled, the processes of testing for sterility and efficacy are covered in the course.
Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Explain the technology involved in the manufacture and quality control of pharmaceuticals. 2. Apply the principles of quality assurance, good manufacturing practice and quality control. 3. Formulate small scale liquid and semi-solid pharmaceutical preparations. 4. Apply the basic physical, chemical and biological knowledge to the formulation of dosage forms with consideration to drug availability and site of action. 5. Demonstrate the principals of sterilization and stability testing. 6. Practice the hospital policies to ensure safety for patients and rational use of drugs. 7. Apply knowledge and experience in the documentation and preparation of selected products and formulations. 8. Obtain and interpret information from literature and apply this information in clinical situations.
