Unit Name: Sociology and Administration of Sports

Description: \" This unit builds upon knowledge and skills developed in PHE701 ADMIN OF SCHOOL SPORTS & PE and PHE702 APPLIED RESEARCH IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORTS and introduce Sociology of Sport – the study of the purpose and place of sport in societies. Issues will be identified and discussed to attain an understanding of the relevance of Physical Education within the educational system and in the community. The place and importance of Sports and Physical Education in the school system and society are fundamental to the development of these areas in Fiji. This course will allow students to identify the global and local issues in relation to sport and Physical Education, discuss the current situation and hypothesize the future directions and implication of these issues to Fiji. Practical skills will continue to be developed through the revision of rugby, netball and soccer and the introduction of cricket and swimming Teaching strategies, drills and lead-up games will be included in all game studies. \"

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1.2.1 Analyse the role of sports in our society and discuss its social processes 1.2.2 Demonstrate the relationship between social theories and sports and differentiate between nature and nurture 1.2.3 Analyse the influence of sports on culture 1.2.4 Provide key issues influencing the status and development of school sports 1.2.5 Demonstrate the concept of administration in sports and physical education activities.

Prerequisite: A pass in PHE501,PHE502, PHE600, PHE601 and PHE701
