Unit Name: Paediatrics III

Description: his course will help enhance students clinical knowledge, skills and attitudes concerning child health and paediatrics at a postgraduate level appropriate for a Pacific Island Consultant Paediatrician, enabling students to manage more complicated cases in liaison with multi-disciplinary teams, function in an advisory capacity in matters related to health and disease of children, national policies regarding child health, be able to educate medical and para-medical members of the team involved in the care of the child. Students will acquire managerial skills to lead and direct a team of medical and para-medical staff, be a practitioner of evidence-based medicine, a counsellor, educator, teacher, researcher in all areas pertaining to health and sickness of children in the Pacific region. The course will focus on the physiological aspects of normal growth and development of a child and its pathological deviations. As well as the diagnosis, treatment and management of common illnesses, the less common but important diseases and public health issues will be addressed. Within the course, implementation and evaluation of standardised programmes such as the Expanded Program for Immunization (EPI), Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI) will be covered.

Practice management of patients with disorders of the gastrointestinal system. 3. Practice management of patients with nutritional disorders. 4. Practice management of fluid and electrolyte disturbances in health and disease. 5. Practice management of patients with neoplastic diseases. 6. Practice management of patients with mental health disorders. 7. Practice management of patients with ophthalmological disorders. 8. Practice management of patients with Oto-rhino-laryngology & Oral health problems. 9. Practice management of patients with acute life threatening disorders. 10. Practice management of patients with genetic disorders. 11. Practice management of patients with disorders of inborn errors of metabolism. 12. Practice management of patients with skin diseases. 13. Practice management of common problems of adolescence. 14. Practice management of common gynecological problems in female adolescents. 15. Practice management of certain unclassified disorders.
