Unit Name: Paediatrics I

Description: This course will help develop clinical knowledge, skills and attitudes concerning child health and paediatrics at a postgraduate level appropriate for a Pacific Island general practitioner or medical officer with a special interest in children.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge and competent performance in taking care of the new born and capability to manage common illnesses of the neonatal period. 2. Demonstrate understanding and competent performance in taking care of the children with diarrheal diseases, malnutrition and failure to thrive and be able to manage them expeditiously and appropriately. 3. Manage children with common neurological disorders. 4. Practice management of children with common respiratory disorders in the community. 5. Practice management of children with common hematological and hemato - oncological disorders in Pacific. 6. Manage children with common congenital and acquired cardio-vascular disorders prevalent in the Pacific. 7. Manage common renal disorders in Pacific (hematuria & Proteinuria). 8. Describe and manage common genetic disorders, normal growth and development, behavioural disorders. 9. Manage patient with infectious diseases and infestations. 10. Describe and manage common child protection issues.
