Unit Name: NCD Literature Review

Description: This course will introduce students to Literature Review .Initially ,the focus will be for students to develop that knowledge in recognizing the importance and priority ethics plays in research. Students will be taught the proper paraphrasing techniques for different examples obtained from peer reviewed articles or any form of literature or source material. Students will acquire hands-on experience in conducting a literature review from the conception of a research idea to the development of search strategies using databases and relevant search engines through evidence based practices. The systematic review guideline PRISMA will be the focus and will be taught in details step wise so that students will understand and are able to apply it in any future research. The importance of these steps and Literature Review for that matter is to identify gaps in knowledge which will assist students to recognize the uniqueness and applicability of their research topic in their own contextual settings. There are areas such as academic writing that will be reinforced especially as students will be better equipped with these skills when they move on towards their major thesis and proposal development. In addition, critique writing is included as well to test the students critical thinking abilities so they are able to have a broader perspective of public health issues that affect communities. Ultimately, towards the end of the course, students are able to harness all necessary skills and knowledge learnt from previous weeks and develop a Literature Review on any Noncommunicable Disease topic of their choice. This course will also prepare the students in the development of their NCD research proposal in PCP 907.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Apply knowledge on ethics and execute skills in scientific and academic writing 2. Demonstrate and execute knowledge on guidelines to search for evidence using Evidence based practices including PRISMA guidelines 3. Conduct hands on practical exercises and demonstrate skills in executing NCD literature search 4. Demonstrate and apply skills in critiquing literature and evidence 5. Demonstrate and execute knowledge in writing NCD Literature Review Project
