Unit Code: PCP902

Unit Name: Proposal Development for Evaluation of Sexual and Reproductive Health Program/Project or SRH Research

Description: In this course, MSRH students will design and develop a proposal to evaluate an SRH programme or project at national or subnational level to assess its effectiveness in achieving its stated objectives or a proposal to conduct a SRH Research. This course will expose students to the best practice in the philosophy and approaches of SRH programme design, evaluation and research. Students would strengthen the necessary skills they need to have, to approach and engage in research and evaluation in a systematic way. SRH research methods in both quantitative methods and qualitative methods will be covered, dealing with theoretical approaches and views to practical issues in research utilizing these methods, and analysis. Students will select research methods, variables and how to measure selected variables, using a choice of quantitative or qualitative methods, or a combination of the two on how to evaluate a SRH programme/project or to conduct a SRH Research. This will require ethics approval. Computing and analytical skills will also be strengthened through practical activities. Students will learn to develop research/evaluation statements, write a literature review, write a review article, and prepare a full research proposal on evaluation of SRH Prog/project or on a SRH research. This will make students mindful of pitfalls to watch out for when doing their own Masters research project, or other research exercises. To achieve this, students will study: The Science of SRH Research; The philosophical framework of SRH Research Designs: Quantitative and Qualitative; Investigating SRH – The scope of Research; SRH Research Statement and SRH Research Proposal; Hypothesis and Research Question Formulation; SRH Research Approaches; Measurement Tool and Instruments; Analysis in Applied research; Application of SRH Research; Statistical Tools in Research; Writing in SRH research; and Writing for a Scientific Journal.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of philosophies, theories, approaches and best practice to SRH programme design, SRH evaluation phases & processes and SRH research 2. Demonstrate knowledge on the types of SRH program evaluation phases & processes, SRH research needs and evaluate SRH ethical considerations 3. Design search strategy in different databases to find SRH literatures and identify gaps of SRH knowledge in evaluating a SRH program evaluation phases & processes/project or develop SRH research proposal. 4.Demonstrate knowledge on SRH program evaluation phases & processes/project or develop a full SRH research proposal with qualitative and quantitative methods, data collection tool, sampling and sample size, data management and analysis. 5. Develop the proposal on evaluating a SRH program/project or SRH research proposal
