Unit Name: Motivational Interview and Behavioural Change in SRH (MI)
Description: This is an elective course designed to provide students with a theoretical foundation in counselling and behaviour change in SRH settings, using the concept of motivational interview. It is specifically focused on applying MI skills in a variety of SRH circumstances which often have deeper linkages to sexual behaviours, cultural and psycho-social dimensions, and therefore requires special skills of the provider to help clients without compromising their trust in securing privacy and confidentiality. PCP817 teaches practical skills needed to motivate and implement behavioural change interventions in health care settings, aiming to achieve positive behaviour and practices to protect and enhance sexual and reproductive health and well-being. The course is also designed for develop skills among health professionals or counsellors who will be tasked with counselling patients or clients towards positive SRH behaviour change. This course will explore the roles of the environment and social determinants towards SRH behaviour and practices using the social model dimensions. It highlights the importance of the foundation theories, models and concepts of motivational interview (MI), evidence based prevention, and behaviour change counselling towards positive SRH behaviour and practices. Students will apply MI skills in clinical settings.
