Unit Name: Smoking, Nutrition, Alcohol, Physical Activity, Stress, Spirituality (SNAPSS) Counseling and Behavior Change with Obesity Prevention

Description: This course is designed to provide students with theoretical foundation in counselling and behaviour change with obesity prevention, using the concept of motivational interview. It also teaches practical skills needed to motivate and implement this behavioural intervention in health care settings targeting positive behaviour change in relation to Smoking, Nutrition, Alcohol, Physical Activity, Stress and Spirituality (SNAPSS) issues with obesity prevention.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate understanding of the foundation theories, models and concepts of motivational interview in behavior change and evidence based obesity prevention and management. 2. Analyse the roles of the environment towards our food consumption pattern, physical activity level, smoking, alcohol, stress and spirituality in NCD prevention. 3. Analyse tools and practise the core skills in the assessment of an obese patient, motivational interview and management of behavior change counselling in SNAPSS. 4. Analyze and review guidelines and care pathways to enhance obesity management through diet and physical activity, and discuss barriers to change management of SNAPSS in work settings. 5. Apply motivational interview and behavioural change counselling skills in SNAPSS to NCD patients in health facilities.
