Unit Name: Package Of Essential NCD Interventions For Primary Health Care (PEN)

Description: This Course is about the WHO package of essential NCD interventions for primary health care in low resource settings, and how these strategies can be used to address the burden of noncommunicable disease (NCDs) in the Pacific and in Fiji. It will review and discuss the different intervention strategies within the Pacific NCD framework and targets and how these can be implemented locally in the different countries in the Pacific. PCP811 will also discuss the components of NCDs intervention strategies and plans with the different populations and high risk approaches in prioritizing health issues. It will assist the nonclinical candidates to identify the high risk patients in the community, provide counselling and refer to medical practitioners for further management.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to : 1. Demonstrate the conduct and delivery of the essential NCD interventions model at primary care settings and apply the NCD surveillance/WHO monitoring framework. 2. Analyse and interpret competently the results of blood pressure, blood sugar, blood lipids and integrated cardiovascular risk for NCD patients and the population at large, using the WHO/ISH Risk Prediction charts as per the PEN Management Protocol 1. 3. Demonstrate the proficiencies of NCD Management using the PEN Model assessment tools. 4. Review and demonstrate on how to conduct advocacy and motivational interview on SNAPSS and NCD health promotion messages as per PEN Management Protocol 2. 5. Execute and practice counselling to NCD patients as per PEN Management Protocol 2 and discuss Protocol 3 with essential tools and NCD health information. 6. Recognize and strengthen PEN clinical skills and competencies in managing NCD patients in primary care settings. 7. Synthesize and apply PEN model strategies and approaches including the clinical competencies through and of attachment and/ or observations at various selected health facilities and special clinics.
