Unit Name: Principles of Health Project/Programs Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation
Description: Effective planning, implementing, managing, monitoring and evaluating projects require proper and sound understanding of the appropriate principles and concepts. This course will help one grasp necessary skills required to plan health projects together with monitoring its progress and evaluating outcomes, a structured approach to managing projects will be taught. The course provides a thorough understanding of the essential components of project management methodology and identifies eleven Key Elements that should be applied throughout the project lifecycle. Students will be taught on understanding projects, why and how to do projects, carry out scoping and planning, manage human resources, financial resources to ensure quality deliverables. Identifying risks and strategies to mitigate this risk will also be covered. Important phases of monitoring and evaluation will be discussed and lastly student will learn about project closure. The concepts of this course are relevant to all projects regardless of their size and complexity.
Learning Target Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Appraise various types of public health projects and programs, their essential characteristics, and their significance in the public health context. 2. Explain the key elements and phases of a project or program life cycle, from initiation to closure. 3. Apply principles of scoping, planning, and governance in the design and management of public health project activities. 4. Discuss strategies for resource and quality management, as well as identification and mitigation of project/program risks. 5. Examine the processes involved in implementation, monitoring, evaluation, control, and eventual closure of public health projects or programs.
