Unit Name: Principles of Health Project /programme Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation

Description: Effective planning, implementing, managing, monitoring and evaluating projects require proper and sound understanding of the appropriate principles and concepts. This course will help one grasp necessary skills required to plan health projects together with monitoring its progress and evaluating outcomes, a structured approach to managing projects will be taught. The course provides a thorough understanding of the essential components of project management methodology and identifies eleven Key Elements that should be applied throughout the project lifecycle. Students will be taught on understanding projects, why and how to do projects, carry out scoping and planning, manage human resources, financial resources to ensure quality deliverables. Identifying risks and strategies to mitigate this risk will also be covered. Important phases of monitoring and evaluation will be discussed and lastly student will learn about project closure. The concepts of this course are relevant to all projects regardless of their size and complexity.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to : 1. Appraise projects types, essential project characteristics and importance of projects in Public Health. 2. Explain key elements involved in a project life cycle 3. Apply concepts of scoping, planning and governance of project activities 4. Discuss principles of resource and quality management 5.  Identify project risks and concepts of risk management 6. Discuss project implementation and monitoring and evaluation and control of implemented activities 7. Describe concepts and steps involved in project closure in contrast to evaluation of processes of projects
