Unit Name: Ophthalmology I

Description: Together, The Pacific Eye Institute and The Fiji National University College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences have developed and support ophthalmology qualifications that appropriately meet the current and emerging eye health needs of the Pacific region. The Postgraduate Diploma in Ophthalmology is structured to produce a competent “eye doctor”. It is the prerequisite for The Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) which trains an “ophthalmologist”.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Anticipate different medical emergencies and their effects on eye. 2. Perform a proper history and a detailed ophthalmic examination. 3. Select appropriate ophthalmic instruments for diagnostic purpose. 4. Assess refractive error and conduct proper refraction. 5. Critique the operating theater protocols and the concept of disinfection and sterilization. 6. Interpret the principles of ophthalmic microsurgery and perform cataract surgery safely. 7. Perform pterygium surgery. 8. Perform lid surgery safely. 9. Perform evisceration safely. 10. Generate a plan to manage ocular trauma safely. 11. Assess and manage corneal and external eye problems. 12. Assess diabetic retinopathy and generate a plan for the management of diabetic retinopathy. 13. Assess and formulate a plan to manage ocular emergencies. 14. Recommend on the usage and safety of common ophthalmic drugs. 15. Interpret medical ethics and apply them appropriately. 16. Propose the planning, organization and running of effective and efficient public eye clinic, surgical and community outreach.
