Unit Name: Obstetrics and Gynaecology IV

Description: This course will further develop student’s clinical and procedural skills in obstetrics and gynaecology and become progressively more competent demonstrating that they can function with distant supervision. The students will need to demonstrate clinical maturity, know their limitations and be able to seek advice and consultation when necessary. They would need to be able to identify obstetrical risk factors and manage these appropriately in developing their management plans. They would need to demonstrate skills in operative obstetrics including assisted vaginal deliveries, management of complicated perineal tears, and be able to perform complicated caesarean sections such as those with previous caesarean sections and those with low lying placentae. They would be expected to perform basic surgical gynaecological procedures up to the independent performance of a laparotomy for an acute abdomen and an uncomplicated abdominal and vaginal hysterectomy. This course will expect students to have satisfied required clinical competency in the specialty, pitched at their level of training.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate clinical expertise in the management of pre-pregnancy, antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care of the obstetric patients with moderate to high levels of complexity. 2. Demonstrates clinical competency in the management of complex and critically important gynaecological conditions. 3. Practice diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical skills for the delivery of ethical and effective healthcare services which demonstrates mastery in interpreting, applying & synthesizing knowledge relevant to clinical practice in obstetrics & gynaecology and demonstrates an awareness of the impact on health and well being, of emotional and social issues. 4. Practice a multi-dimensional approach to patient management, by demonstrating mastery skills in clinical reasoning, judgement, management of cases & deal with current limits of medical expertise. 5. Demonstrate an extensive and detailed awareness of epidemiological and national health priorities of sexual and reproductive health in the Pacific to ensure those women\'s reproductive health rights are preserved. 6. Practice well developed ethical and professional attitudes which will enable them to assume positions of responsibility and leadership in the Health Care System in which they are working. 7. Develop, implement and monitor a personal, ongoing professional continuing educational strategy. Demonstrate understanding of the practice of clinical audit, research in a clinical setting and quality assurance processes to ensure maintenance of good practice. 8. Demonstrate leadership in apprenticeship learning for junior colleagues, medical students, nurses, midwives in the Obstetric and Gynaecology Unit as well as other medical and non-medical colleagues with different levels of knowledge and expertise. 9. Critically appraise national, regional and international women\'s health priorities in women\'s health. 10. Critically analyze the customized care practices for the individual needs and wishes of women in their care, taking into account their personal beliefs, experiences, expectations, social, religious, economic and cultural background.
