Unit Name: Obstetrics and Gynaecology III

Description: This course will reinforce and develop student’s clinical competency in core areas of obstetric and gynaecological care. The student will be introduced to more advanced surgical procedures associated with Obstetrics and Gynaecology which would include demonstrating knowledge and application of specific procedures including management of a ruptured ectopic, ovarian cyst complications, colposcopy and LLETZ procedures. The student will demonstrate clinical competency in performing second stage caesarean sections, apply safety procedures associated with assisted vaginal deliveries and demonstrate ability to manage a team attending to an obstetric emergency. Students will develop and practice patient autonomy, confidentiality and demonstrate understanding of the legal and moral duties to women in their care as well as the relevant social/cultural issues that impact on the provision of healthcare for them. At this stage students should provide understanding of the significance of clinical audit, research, maintenance of clinical competence and undertaking quality assurance processes to ensure maintenance of good practice. This course will expect students to have passed required clinical competencies directed at their level of training.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate clinical expertise in the management of pre-pregnancy, antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care of the obstetric patients with moderate levels of complexity. 2. Demonstrates clinical competency in the management of common and critically important gynaecological conditions. 3. Practice clinical expertise in surgical procedures associated with obstetrics and gynaecology (O&G) which applies to, management of equipment used in operative O&G, knowledge and application of specific procedures, risk reduction strategies and management of operative complications. 4. Practice a multi-dimensional approach to patient management, by demonstrating proficiency in clinical reasoning, judgement, management of clinical cases & recognize current limits of medical expertise. 5. Demonstrate awareness of epidemiological and national health priorities of sexual and reproductive health in the Pacific to ensure those women\\\'s reproductive health rights are preserved. 6. Practice ethical and professional attitudes which will enable them to assume positions of responsibility and leadership in the Health Care System in which they are working. 7. Demonstrate self-learning in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and other relevant areas of medical practice. Provide understanding of the significance of clinical audit, research, maintenance of clinical competence and undertaking quality assurance processes to ensure maintenance of good practice. 8. Practices principles of apprenticeship learning for junior colleagues, medical students, nurses in the Obstetric and Gynaecology Unit. 9. Support national, regional and international women\\\'s health priorities in women\\\'s health. 10. Develop and plan, customized care according to the individual needs and wishes of women in their care, taking into account their personal beliefs, experiences, expectations, social, religious, economic and cultural background.
