Unit Name: Obstetrics and Gynaecology II

Description: The course addresses the need for Specialists in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the Pacific. Obstetrics and Gynaecology is the medical specialty concerned with essential components of reproductive health concerning pregnancy and childbirth and women’s reproductive organs, diseases affecting them and appropriate medical and surgical management. Specialists in Obstetrics and Gynaecology provide inpatient and outpatient clinical care and undertake procedures to ensure the safety of the woman and the fetus during pregnancy and childbirth, promotion of good reproductive health and diagnosis, treatment and management relating to diseases of the female reproductive tract.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate clinical expertise in the management of pre-pregnancy, antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care of the obstetric patients with low to moderate levels of complexity. 2. Demonstrate clinical competency in procedures required to investigate and/or treat pregnant women with low to moderate levels of obstetric complexity including the use of appropriate investigations. 3. Develop an understanding of the normal anatomy and function of the female reproductive tract and be able to diagnose low to moderate deviations from the normal and provide appropriate management. 4. Demonstrate clinical competency in surgical procedures required to manage disorders and disease of the female reproductive tract of low to moderate gynaecological complexity). 5. Develop an understanding and recognize the epidemiological and national health priorities of sexual and reproductive health in the Pacific to ensure those women\'s reproductive health rights are preserved. 6. Develop ethical and professional attitudes which will enable them to assume positions of responsibility in the Health Care System in which they are working. 7. Demonstrate self-learning in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and other relevant areas of medical practice. Provide understanding of the significance of clinical audit, maintenance of clinical competence and undertaking quality assurance processes to ensure maintenance of good practice. 8. Apply principles of apprenticeship learning for junior colleagues, medical students and nurses in the Obstetric and Gynaecology unit. 9. Recognise national, regional and international women\'s health priorities in women\'s health. 10.Demonstrate sensitivity towards individual, cultural and religious expectations during management of female patients.
