Unit Name: Obstetrics and Gynaecology I

Description: The Postgraduate Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology programme addresses the need for Women\'s Health Practitioners in the Pacific. It is also the prerequisite for entry into the Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Obstetrics and Gynaecology is the medical specialty concerned with essential components of reproductive health relating to pregnancy and childbirth and women’s reproductive organs, diseases affecting them and appropriate medical and surgical management. Specialists in Obstetrics and Gynaecology provide inpatient and outpatient clinical care and undertake procedures to ensure the safety of the woman and the fetus during pregnancy and childbirth, promotion of good reproductive health and diagnosis, treatment and management relating to diseases of the female reproductive tract.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate clinical expertise in the management of pre-pregnancy, antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care of the obstetric patients with low levels of complexity with integrity, honesty and compassion. 2. Demonstrate clinical competency in procedures required to investigate and/or treat low risk pregnancies including the use of appropriate investigations. 3. Demonstrate clinical expertise as a critical thinker in the management of areas of clinical practice pertaining to common and critically important gynaecological conditions. 4. Demonstrate clinical competency in basic surgical procedures required to manage disorders and disease of the female reproductive tract. 5. Develop understanding of the epidemiological and national health priorities of sexual and reproductive health in the Pacific to ensure those women\'s reproductive health rights are preserved. 6. Develop ethical and professional attitudes which will enable them to assume positions of responsibility and leadership in the Health Care System in which they are working. 7. Demonstrate sensitivity towards individual, cultural and religious expectations during management of female patients in an ethical and compassionate manner, ensuring the establishment of effective communication strategies with women and their families whilst maintaining professional relationships with medical, midwifery, nursing and other health workers. 8. Demonstrate self-learning, maintenance of clinical competence and undertaking quality assurance processes in their practice. 9. Apply the principles and practice of evidence based medicine and demonstrate understanding of the importance of research in Women’s Health with regards to the national and regional women’s health priorities. 10. Demonstrate awareness of the importance of training of junior colleagues and working collaboratively with major stakeholders.
