Unit Name: Research in Nursing

Description: This course deals with the fundamentals and principles of the research principles of the research process and their application in Nursing. The major focus of this course is an introduction to the research process applied to the practice of nursing in an effort to promote, maintain, restore, and reorganize health. This course will examine the research process as the basis for scientific nursing knowledge. Approaches to research and the ways of knowing in Nursing are explored. The steps in the research processes are identified, discussed and developed into a proposal. This course also introduces students to the basic concepts and techniques of data collection and analysis needed in professional health care practice.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Describe the significance of research and evidence based practices in nursing and identify a clinical research problem, formulate research question, aims and objectives. 2. Critically review the literature using the data bases and utilize nursing theories to formulate the theoretical and conceptual framework. 3. Describe a range of qualitative and quantitative research designs used in the health research and identify the advantages and disadvantages associated with these designs. 4. Identify and describe the sampling techniques, data collection methods and analysis techniques in quantitative research. 5. Identify and describe the sampling techniques, data collection methods and analysis techniques in qualitative research. 6. Describe the ethical principles and ethical considerations in health related studies. 7. Utilize the guideline to critically appraise qualitative and quantitative research papers. 8. Describe the various options for disseminating the research findings. 9. Demonstrate the ability of utilizing evidence into the nursing practice.
